Myths About Scoliosis

Scoliosis, the abnormal sideways curvature of the spine, can affect men and women of all ages. Severe deformity is among the largest fears of those diagnosed with the condition. To become as aware as possible, people often search the web for answers to their scoliosis questions. Unfortunately, there are so many scoliosis physiotherapy myths and misconceptions out there that need to be dispelled. Below are some of them:

Scoliosis is a preventable condition

Many parents often feel guilty and wonder how they could have prevented their child’s diagnosis. Unfortunately, there are no clinical studies proving scoliosis can be prevented. In fact, most cases are categorized as “idiopathic,” which means there is no known origin. This phenomenon makes it harder for experts to assess opportunities for prevention. Further studies are still being conducted in order to identify the root cause of scoliosis. So parents shouldn’t beat themselves up about not being able to prevent it.

Heavy backpacks cause scoliosis

Because most scoliosis cases are diagnosed in children between the ages of 10 and 12, there has been much debate suggesting heavy backpacks as the root cause. But no reputable scientific research is available to support this myth. Indeed, prolonged carrying of a heavy backpack is not good for your posture and overall spine health. However, it is not true that it can cause scoliosis, as most cases are idiopathic.

All scoliosis lead to severe deformity

Only a few percentages of overall scoliosis cases result in severe deformity, while the vast majority do not. Many patients didn’t even know they had the condition because there are no symptoms or visible deformity. Most learned they have it through an x-ray of the spine for something unrelated. In most cases, the curvature degree progresses very minutely over time and sometimes doesn’t progress at all. During this stage, doctors would recommend ‘watchful waiting’ as a treatment approach. Quality bracing for scoliosis is also an option.

Surgery is very risky and painful

Medical science has come a long way since corrective surgery for spinal deformities began. Newer, safer, and less traumatic techniques have been developed over the years. In addition, there is much clinical evidence available to support their effectiveness. Nowadays, surgeons don’t need to make large incisions that take a long time to heal. Better results can be achieved with modern techniques involving small incisions with fewer complications from surgery.

Exercise & bracing can reverse scoliosis

Most patients don’t enjoy the idea of surgery to correct curvature, so they attempt alternative methods like bracing, manipulation, and Schroth therapy. Sadly, a common myth among patients is believing their curve would be reversed or ‘cured’ by these efforts. Alternative therapies are not intended to reverse scoliosis but stop or slow its progression. Nevertheless, when properly employed, these techniques have a positive effect on back pain and discomfort.
