Functional Rehabilitation for Spine Curvature Disorders

Spine curvature disorders may affect both children and adults. The treatment for each condition may vary depending on the severity of the disorder. Treatment should be given to the patient as soon as possible to relieve pain and prevent causing further damage to the spine and other parts of the body.

Milder cases of spine curvature disorder often require medication and exercise programs, such as functional rehabilitation, to provide pain relief and restore the body’s functions. Severe cases may require invasive surgery, followed by medication and other treatment plans to aid the patient’s recovery.

What are the types of Spine Curvature Disorders?

Scoliosis is characterized by a sideways curve to the patient’s spine. The curve is often S-shaped or C-shaped.

Lordosis, also called swayback, is a condition where the spine of the patient’s spine curves significantly inward at the lower back.

Kyphosis is characterized by an abnormally rounded upper back (more than 50 degrees of curvature).

How do you treat spinal curvature disorders?

Since the cause and nature of the disorders are different, the treatment for each may also vary. For example, physiotherapists may prescribe non-surgical scoliosis treatment for patients suffering from mild spine curvature disorders.

For Scoliosis

  • Observation
  • Wear back brace
  • Surgery
  • Regular exercise

After analyzing the patient’s condition, the physiotherapist may recommend the Schroth physical therapy as it is specifically designed to help patients with scoliosis

For Lordosis

  • Medication to relieve pain and swelling
  • Exercise and physical therapy to increase muscle strength and flexibility
  • Wear a back brace
  • Weight loss
  • Surgery

For Kyphosis

  • Anti-inflammatory medication to ease pain or discomfort
  • Wear a back brace
  • Exercises and physical therapy to increase muscle strength
  • Surgery to correct severe spine curvature

How does functional rehabilitation help?

The aim of functional rehabilitation is to help the patients regain their original range of motion and alleviate the pain caused by spine curvature disorders.

Scoliosis correction may take some time and sign up for a treatment plan does not mean that the disorder will be eliminated. It is still there, following the treatment plan will allow the patient to slowly go back to their routines without feeling too much pain or discomfort.
