Acute back pain can be due to injury, but usually, it is caused by bad posture, poor posture, weak core muscle, weak hip muscle, lack of movement, lack of flexibility, or lack of function.
We are more and more stationary and sitting without moving and proper exercise.
This causes the hamstring and/or hip muscles to shorten and our core to get weaker. This can all lead to compressions, which destroys tissue, which can cause pain and why we avoid certain movements or exercises. It is a vicious circle which leads to degeneration, affecting any joint, hips, shoulders, and spine.
When a patient comes to us with back pain, we are analyzing the problem. Not everybody has the same weaknesses, and the cause is different for every person. Day to day life, the person’s activities, and what they are doing. Is it functional? Are they too flexible? Or is the person the exact opposite and is too stiff? All these points have to be assessed before planning a treatment solution.
Should one symptom be pain, we are treating the pain first. However, the patient must understand that this initial treatment is designed to alleviate or remove the pain. Once this is achieved, we have to look at the cause of the problem to prevent it from resurfacing in the future.
